Justin Tomlinson MP today welcomed the revision by the Environment Agency (EA) to the flood risk ratings for East Swindon.
The update to the risk ratings follows the revision of the EA’s Flood Map in August 2011 and forms part of the National Flood Risk Assessment (NaFRA). The update for East Swindon covers the River Cole at Lower Stratton up to its confluence with South Marston Brook, South Marston Brook, Dorcan Brook and Liden Brook.
In updating the risk ratings, the EA used improved modelling methods and new data, taking into account local improvement measures, such as the flood storage area on Dorcan Brook.
Based on this new information, the risk rating for many areas has changed. The main area of change is upstream of the Dorcan Brook Flood Alleviation Scheme.
The changes have affected a total of about 740 properties in East Swindon. The assessment of the risk to around 100 properties has decreased and approximately 100 properties have been removed from the Flood Map altogether. About 100 properties have seen the assessment of the flood risk increase, and about 250 have stayed the same. In addition, approximately 130 properties are in areas new to the Flood Map.
Justin Tomlinson MP said “I am pleased that following the update to the flood map, the risk ratings for East Swindon have been revised. This will benefit many frustrated residents who have seen their risk of flooding fall thanks to flood alleviation work, but have not been able to see a comparable drop in home insurance costs.”
