North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson, has leant his support to a Bill designed to support the education of children from the most educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
Under the Bill, schools would be required to establish individual education plans for pupils identified as at risk of educational disadvantage. It would also ensure that the educational progress of pupils during their school career is monitored. Pupils would be identified if they gained poor results in SATs tests at age 11, ensuring secondary schools give them the help needed as they move towards GCSEs at 16
The Bill proposes that children are marked out from 11 if they are in danger of failing to gain good GCSEs. These pupils should formally be defined "at risk of educational disadvantage", with specialist plans being created to give students tailored access to additional teaching.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "This Bill rightly proposes identifying students as quickly as possible who may be at risk of underperforming in their GCSEs and offering them tailored support in secondary schools. These proposals will ensure that no child is left behind and specialist individual plans will mean that help all young people progress to the highest standard in a manner that works for them."
