Justin Tomlinson, the North Swindon MP and Minister for Disabled People, has joined more than seventy MPs at Mencap’s Parliamentary Reception to celebrate Learning Disability Week.
There are 1.4 million people in the UK with a learning disability and 6 million more family members and carers connected to them. At the event, Justin talked with young people who have a learning disability and their families from across the country about the changes they want to see over the next five years.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "I was delighted to attend Mencap's excellent event to meet with young people from across the country who have learning disabilities. We have made real progress in recent years and I am committed to working with organisations like Mencap to continue to change attitudes and bust myths about learning difficulties."
Jan Tregelles, Chief Executive at Mencap said: “We are incredibly pleased that Justin was able to attend the event. It’s vital to bring about the change in attitudes we’re fighting for that the decision-makers in society are aware of the challenges faced by people with a learning disability. With the support of Justin and newly elected MPs, we hope the lives of the people we support will remain firmly in their minds over the next five years”.
