North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson is highlighting a scheme to protect dementia sufferers from nuisance and scam phone calls.
The National Trading Standards Scam Team has secured Government funding to provide free 'trueCall' call blockers to protect dementia sufferers from nuisance calls and calls which pose a serious risk of being scammed.
The trueCall box allows the phone to ring as normal for trusted callers but blocks around 95% of unwanted calls without the phone ever ringing. For even more protection, the trueCall unit can completely block calls from unrecognised callers with a message asking them to hang up and call the carer if their call is important.
There are only a very limited number of trueCall units, and they will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: “It is appalling that scammers target vulnerable people, such as those suffering from dementia, and I am delighted that the Government is rightly providing funding to tackle this. I know from my casework that a number of local residents have had to endure nuisance calls which are at best an inconvenience and at worse are criminal. This is another positive step being taken to end this practice."
