Justin Celebrates Success As Government Announces Ban On Sale Of Ivory

Justin Tomlinson MP has welcomed the Government’s announcement that it is to proceed with a total ban the sale of ivory in the UK.

The plans put the UK at the forefront of global efforts to address the drastic decline in the elephant population. The global demand for ivory poses a great threat to the world’s elephant population, with around 20,000 elephants slaughtered every year to satisfy the demand.

Justin has actively campaigned to end the trade in ivory since his election to Parliament in 2010. He has led debates and championed the work of the International Fund for Animal Welfare – which advocates on a number of animal welfare issues, including the ivory trade.

The proposals will protect elephants and help combat poaching by removing opportunities for criminals to trade illegally-poached ivory.

The plans will be subject to a 12 week consultation period and cover items of all ages. The Government will work with conservationists, and the arts and antiques sectors to ensure there is no room for loopholes in the plans which would continue to fuel the poaching of elephants.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I am delighted that the Government has set out these plans and is taking decisive action to stop the ivory trade. Elephants are one of the most iconic species in the world and we must do all we can to protect them from this abhorrent trade. Since I was first elected, I have campaigned tirelessly for a total ban on ivory and the Environment Secretary's announcement is vital in ending the this abhorrent trade.”
