Justin Tomlinson MP has welcomed the introduction of annual summaries which will show taxpayers for the first time exactly how the money they contributes through taxation is spent by Government.
The summaries, sent to 24 million PAYE and self-employed taxpayers who have contributed income tax and national insurance in the last twelve months, will provide the first personalised breakdown of which areas the Government spends money.
The proposal was initially brought forward in a Bill before Parliament to which Justin was one of the twelve original signatories. The idea was supported by the Chancellor, George Osborne, who agreed to include the measure in his Budget. Between today and 19th December, tax summaries will land on doormats across the country.
Annual tax summaries form the latest move by the Government to be the most open and transparent in history and will empower taxpayers to guarantee they receive value for money for the services they receive and ensure responsible public expenditure. The new summaries have also received the backing of important organisations including the TaxPayers' Alliance.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "I am delighted that from today, taxpayers across the country will be able to see exactly how Government spends the money it receives from hardworking people. This measure, which I was proud to support, opens up government spending and will ensure that taxpayers can see that their money is spent effectively - after all, there is no such thing as "Government Money" only taxpayers' money!"
