Justin Congratulates Swindon Parkinson's UK Group On Queen's Award

A local charity has been commended by Her Majesty The Queen for its work supporting people in Swindon affected by Parkinson’s Disease – news which has been welcomed by North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson.

The Swindon and District branch of Parkinson’s UK has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition for its work helping people affected by Parkinson’s Disease stay physically, socially and mentally active. The award is equal to an MBE and awarded to groups who have shown exceptional work in their communities.

Justin has been a long-time supporter of the group and wrote a letter in support of their application for the award. He has also offered his support to the groups campaigns and highlighted issues affecting people experiencing Parkinson’s Disease. Justin’s community office is also the venue for the group’s monthly coffee morning. The monthly meeting gives people with Parkinson’s and their families the opportunity to socialise, share experiences and support each other.

Winners receive a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed glass crystal. Dave Logan the Branch Chair and Daphne Logan were also invited to and attended a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace as part of the award.

The group holds a variety of exercise classes - such as walking football, Tai Chi and dance – to keep its members physically active. There are also social activities organised by the group, such as coffee mornings, quiz nights and lunches – which provide much needed support for its members and their families.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “This is excellent news, and thoroughly well deserved. I have seen first-hand how the groups brings people together and the important support they give each other. I am just delighted that the hard work and dedication of this group is being recognised.”
