Justin Highlights Importance Of Increased Social Mobility As Inequality Falls

North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson has welcomed the announcement by the Institute for Fiscal Studies that wealth inequality in the UK between the rich and the poor has reduced.

The news comes just a week after Justin raised important developments in Government policy that are increasing social mobility for people in Swindon, as well as presenting measures that should be taken to increase social mobility further.

Justin continued to raise a priority concern of his that young people must be able to access the skills to reach their full potential and that every opportunity is made the most of for their sake, regardless of their background. He also welcomed the news that 1.8 million additional pupils are in good or outstanding schools since 2010, but called for more to be done to celebrate and the share best practice of teachers working with pupils from the most challenging backgrounds.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies has projected that in the last nine years, inequality has fallen between the highest and lowest income groups and that this is caused by the impacts of record numbers of people in work, combined with wage increases for low and median income earners.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: "Contrary to the stories pushed by the Labour Party, the independent assessment of the levels of equality in the UK has shown once again that the gap has fallen under a Conservative government. I am determined to see this gap fall even further and it is vital that we work to deliver a stronger economy and a world-class education system that equips young people with the skills to reach their full potential in the world of work"
