Justin Hosts Digital Safety & Scam Awareness Drop In Event

Local MP Justin Tomlinson has hosted a Digital Safety and Scam Awareness drop-in session at his community office on the Orbital Shopping Park.

The event was put on in partnership with Barclays Bank, who brought along their Digital Eagles team to speak to people about online banking scams.

Justin was also joined by Swindon Borough Council’s 'Buy With Confidence' team to raise awareness of the variety of tactics used by those who attempt to trick people, including door-to-door scams. The Council's team also provided a list of all locally approved tradespeople, as well as information about various different campaigns which have been run alongside Trading Standards.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “What struck me most about the event is that anybody can become a victim of a scam. No matter how much we think we know and how good we think we are with computers and our own security; anybody can fall vulnerable to criminals who are becoming extremely sophisticated and convincing. The measures that they are adopting to try and catch people out are scary, particularly when you think about elderly relatives who could be particularly vulnerable. I want to thank those who came to the digital safety event. For all of those who couldn’t come I have plenty of leaflets with various different bits of information regarding different scams which residents are welcome to come along and pick up. You never know; you or a member of your family could become a victim of these clever and dangerous criminals.”
