Justin Joins Local Parkinson's UK Branch For Coffee Morning

Local MP Justin Tomlinson joined the Swindon branch of Parkinson’s UK for a cup of tea at one of their regular coffee mornings held at the Grange Leisure Centre in Stratton.

Parkinson’s effects 1 in 500 people in the UK, making a total of around 127,000 people overall. Currently there is no cure, but drugs and treatments are available to manage many of the symptoms.

There are around 365 Parkinson's UK local groups throughout the UK. These are run by volunteers who usually have experience of Parkinson's and are supported by Parkinson's UK staff. The local groups aim to provide members with the confidence to try new things, including exercise classes, and provide general support so that the group can become an integral part of life. The groups welcome family members and carers, and some involve health or social care professionals. Meetings can be informal - a chance to talk and discuss worries and experiences - or may include a presentation by an invited speaker, such as a healthcare professional or complementary therapist.

Many groups hold social events and activities too. This is where the Swindon branch really excels as classes are provided at the Grange Leisure Centre to help members with their mobility.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: "it was great to pop along and join local members of Parkinson's UK to hear about the concerns of those with Parkinson's as well as the carers too. One of the most debilitating aspects of Parkinson’s is the restriction of mobility. Thankfully, the Swindon branch provide inclusive exercise classes at the Grange Leisure Centre to help sufferers with their mobility – something that we all take for granted. The volunteers deserve a huge amount of credit for providing such a fun and sociable environment for members and I am looking forward to visiting them again in the new year.”
