Justin Joins The Celebrations As Swindon MS Society Marks 50 Years

Local MP and Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson was guest of honour as the Swindon & District branch of the Multiple Sclerosis UK charity celebrated its 50th birthday at the Marriott Hotel this weekend.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too.

The birthday bash started off with a 3-course meal, followed by a live band and an auction which raised over £700 for the local branch. The event was attended by over 100 people, all of whom have experience with dealing with MS, either through themselves or a member of their family.

Justin was delighted to speak to guests at the end of the dinner, thanking all of the volunteers in the room for their efforts in running the charity and praising the committee members who have provided 50 years of support so far.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “In my Ministerial role, I meet with the Chief Executives of lots of different stakeholders and charities. Whilst this is crucial to supporting people with disabilities, it is also important to remember that it is the army of volunteers that really keep these vital support networks going. Saturday provided everybody with an opportunity to celebrate 50 years of fundraising, support and providing care. On behalf of the Government, I was able to say a big thank you to everybody in the room for their role in supporting people with MS. They are truly the unsung heroes of our society.”
