Local MP Justin Tomlinson was invited to the London offices of Facebook to hear about the effort being made to promote small and medium size enterprises across the UK.
There are currently 34 million monthly active users of Facebook in the UK - a varied mix of ages, background and cultures all using the site to interact with friends and neighbours online. Understandably therefore businesses are increasingly investing time and money into Facebook pages to reach millions of people who use the site every day. Furthermore the site allows location filters so that businesses can adapt the site to their target markets and connect with people who are based in the same location.
For smaller businesses who are just starting up, Facebook provides a fantastic opportunity to create a quick online presence without having to immediately splash out on websites. It's no wonder then that Facebook are continuously looking at how they can provide even more help to small businesses across the UK.
As a champion of small local businesses, Justin was interested to hear how businesses in Swindon could fully utilise the site as a marketing tool. He suggested that Facebook visits UK towns like Swindon to host events and workshops for local businesses.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "I have always been a Facebook user. I used it to promote my own business before becoming an MP and now I use it to keep in touch with local residents and inform them of what I have been getting up to. Anything that helps SMEs to promote their business gets my support. Although for the sake of my waistline, I am happy that the House of Commons does not have a constant supply of cakes and sweets like the Facebook offices did."
