Justin Meets Commonweal Students To Discuss Global Access To Education

The plight of millions of young people around the world unable to access education was raised with North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson as pupils from Commonweal School visited Parliament.

Justin met with Sadie and Sophie from Commonweal School to discuss the importance of access to education and the many children who are not able to attend school.

According to the campaign, 262 million children and young people remain out of school and many that are in school are not learning. Sophie and Sadie spoke to Justin and asked him to work with the Government to ensure that educational opportunities are available for all children across the world.

Global education is a cause Justin has been working on since becoming an MP, and he was formerly Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on the issue. He has campaigned consistently to improve educational standards across the world, hosting events, chairing meetings, and working with local schools to keep this important issue on the agenda.

Sadie: "I enjoyed parliamentary action day a lot but my favourite part of it was the chance to speak about the campaign to MPs and spread the awareness throughout parliament"

Sophie: "Parliamentary Action Day was a great campaigning opportunity, and I was thrilled with the reception that MPs gave us. I hope that the campaign message was spread and that our work influences policy around global education - such as the return of the ODA budget to 0.7% - and that the UK considers global education at both COP, and the Global Refugee Forum."

Justin Tomlinson MP said: β€œIt was a pleasure to meet Sadie and Sophie. I was very impressed by their enthusiasm and passion for this important issue. It was amazing to see their knowledge and understanding for the difficulties many children face across the world – they were a real credit to their school.

Global education is an issue that I take incredibly seriously, having chaired the All-Party on this issue in Parliament. There has been some great progress – millions of young people around the world have spoken out and millions more children have benefited from an education.”
