Justin Meets With The School Library Association

North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson, has met with Alison Tarrant from the School Library Association to discuss a number of issues relating to school libraries.

Based at Kembrey Park in Swindon, the School Library Association (SLA) is committed to supporting everyone involved with school libraries, promoting high quality reading and learning opportunities for all. The organisation provides advice and training for school librarians as well as advocating on behalf of libraries in school.

During the meeting, Justin heard about the benefits school libraries have on literacy and attainment in schools as well as the positive effects they have on mental health and pupil behaviour. Justin also highlighted some of the initiatives carried out by schools in Swindon, such as Haydonleigh Primary School’s library bus.

The visit happened shortly after Justin launched the Summer Reading Challenge in Parliament, and he was keen to learn how the SLA could work with schools to further promote and support school libraries.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “As the former chair of the Libraries Group in Parliament, I absolutely recognise the important role school libraries play in supporting a child’s education. It was fantastic to meet with Alison, and to hear about the fantastic work the SLA does and how I can support it as an MP.”
