Justin Opens New £3.2 Million Stagecoach Bus Depot

Local MP Justin Tomlinson has opened the new Stagecoach bus depot on the Cheney Manor Industrial Estate.

The new site on Darby Close, is a £3.2 million investment which has taken 42 weeks to construct after Justin put the first spade in the ground last year.

The new base will allow Stagecoach to expand in Swindon, opening up more bus routes and expand the network, as well as creating more jobs.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “This is fantastic. It’s a £3.2 million investment creating more jobs and is a real boost for the local economy. I put the spade in the ground here only last June so to see how much work so quickly is great. This is a key part of the regeneration of Swindon and yet again another company is putting money in Swindon. I was also delighted to see that the new site has been designed especially to be environmentally friendly, with solar panels on the roof, creating enough energy to power the depot and put some energy into the grid as well.”

Cabinet Member for Transport, Cllr. Dale Heenan, said: “The new depot is good endorsement for Swindon and will create more jobs but more importantly it gives Stagecoach a much better presence in the town. I hope we can continue discussions with Stagecoach, particularly over their ambitious plans for the future.”

Rupert Cox, Managing Director for Stagecoach West, said, “It’s been a long time in the planning. It’s been exciting to see the building coming on since June when work first started. We carry more and more people in Swindon. We are running more buses and employ more people. This facility will allow us to run up to 20 more buses, which in turn could mean over the next five years we could employ 50 more people.”
