Local MP Justin Tomlinson organised and spoke at a public meeting at Hanover House in Highworth alongside representatives of the Royal Mail, the local postmaster and local Town & Borough Councillors. They were there to discuss with local residents the imminent plans to move the Post Office in Highworth.
Everybody at the meeting sympathised with the fact that the Post Office was no longer financially viable in its current location on the High Street. But residents had concerns in regard to where the new post office would be based - within the proposed new Budgens store old Shell garage on the main road currently being consulted on.
The Post Office explained the process and discussed how the Co-op was not willing to be considered as an option, and other potential shops on the High Street were simply too small.
Justin commented “Residents were understandably concerned about how they would cross busy roads to reach the potential new Post Office, which would no longer be on the High Street. I am extremely keen to reach a solution which everybody is happy with on this matter. It was rightly agreed that the Swindon Borough Councillors Maureen Penny, Alan Bishop and Steve Weisinger would urgently investigate the feasibility of new crossings and discuss with Stagecoach whether they would move the bus stop closer to the new site. I would continue to support these efforts.”
