Justin Praises Local Police Officers As Crime Hits Record Low

North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson, has praised local police officers after crime fell for the second year running.

Crime across Swindon and Wiltshire fell by more than 6% over the past twelve months thanks to the tireless work of the constabulary's officers, who have reduced the level of offences to a 30-year low. Nationally, crime is down by more than 10% under this government and at its lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981. The independent crime survey also shows that the public's experience of crime is at its lowest level since records began. Of particular note, Wiltshire Police have seen a reduction of 35.8% in robbery, which is the largest reduction seen nationally and its officers spend 77% of their time out on the beat – one of the primary reasons for the fall in crime.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: "Crime has once again fallen across Swindon and Wiltshire and it is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the officers who keep us safe. With crime at a record low, I know that our local officers will continue to strive to break records and reduce crime even further across our area. Officers from across our area and beyond have earned plaudits from the Home Secretary – and rightly so!"

Swindon and Wiltshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, Angus Macpherson said: "In my Police and Crime Plan which covers the four years to 2017 I have made it clear that I want to see a 10 per cent reduction in the overall level of crime and anti-social behaviour. The overall crime figures for 2012-13 are an indication that the force is moving in the right direction."
