As part of Carers Rights Day, North Swindon MP and Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson, joined local Swindon carers at the Wyvern Theatre for a day of workshops and discussions.
Across the UK today 6.5 million people are carers, supporting people who are old, disabled or seriously ill. Whether providing round-the-clock care or for a few hours a week – caring can have a huge effect on people’s lives. Locally Swindon Carers provides expert information and advice to carers, champion their rights and support carers in finding new ways to cope.
Importantly they are also there to listen to carers and provide them with opportunities to voice their concerns. Justin was joined by representatives from Swindon Borough Council in a live Q&A session where a room of over 30 carers were given the opportunity to ask questions.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I was delighted to spend Carers Rights Day right here in my own constituency with Swindon Carers, an organisation who I have supported since becoming an MP and who I made sure to visit on my first day of official Ministerial visits! The Government recognises and appreciates the vital contribution made by informal carers who provide invaluable support for relatives, partners, friends and neighbours who may be ill, frail or disabled. That’s why we have ensured that carers are central to the Government’s reforms to care and support, and there are stronger rights for carers in the Care Act, which came into force in April 2015.”
