Justin Tomlinson MP has welcomed news that crime across the country has fallen to its lowest level in history, and thanked local police officers for their continued hard work.
Latest figures from the independent Office for National Statistics recorded crime in Swindon & Wiltshire has fallen by 14% and nationally, crime measured by the independent Crime Survey has fallen by 25% since 2010 - the lowest level since the survey began in 1981.
The Independent Crime Survey of England and Wales showed that in year to September 2014 – compared with the year ending June 2010 – there were:
- 2.4 million fewer crimes.
- 150,000 fewer homes burgled.
- 317,000 fewer vehicle crimes.
- 400,000 fewer violent crimes.
- 941,000 fewer incidents of criminal damages
The Government has cut red tape so the police can focus on fighting crime, not fighting paperwork. The changes have saved an estimated 4.5 million hours of police time, equivalent to 2,100 police officer posts, meaning officers can be focussed on just one target: cutting crime.
The Government is following an action plan to tackle crime by:
- Freeing the police to fight crime by cutting red tape and scrapping unnecessary targets
- Giving criminals tougher sentences so communities are protected and justice is done
- Giving the police the powers they need to tackle criminals, using the latest tools and techniques
- Stopping people from becoming criminals by tackling the root causes of crime
- Making the police answer to the community to help drive down crime in your area
Justin Tomlinson MP said: “We want Swindon to be an even safer place for everyone who lives here. That’s why we are following an action plan to tackle crime. Thanks to our plan, and the hard work of police officers, recorded crime is down by 14% in Swindon and Wiltshire. Families are safer and more secure – and Swindon can enjoy a better, brighter future.”
