Justin Tomlinson MP today joined his South Swindon colleague Robert Buckland on a visit to Intel in Swindon.
The meeting was an opportunity to discuss Intel’s position in Swindon as well as the company’s work, from developing cutting edge technology to training 10 million teachers as part of the ‘Intel Teach’ scheme.
Discussion focused on the significant investment the Government is making to ensure that the UK becomes one of the leading technology nations of the developed world, from Tech City in London to the ambition of seeing the M4 Corridor become a ‘silicon valley’, something Swindon would benefit significantly from.
Also debated was how technology can be used to save energy, whether it is making the computers themselves more energy efficient, something Intel has invested considerably in, or using computers to cut the carbon footprint of other technologies and industries. Over the last 30 years, the automotive industry has seen energy efficiency improve by around 40%, the computer industry has seen an improvement of around 3 million percent.
Justin and Robert also had the opportunity to look at some of Intel’s latest products, from the chip inside the new range of ultra-slim laptops, to the first ever Intel powered smartphone which boasts the ability to stream high definition video from the phone to a TV or projector.
Justin Tomlinson said “Intel are a fantastic company to have here in Swindon, developing some of the most advanced technologies on earth that power the computers and phones we rely on every day. It is important that the UK places itself at the front of this vital industry so that our economy benefits from investment in this growing market. I am delighted to see Swindon a part of a new ‘technology Britain’, it is a real boost for our town.”
