The Chiseldon House Hotel was host to another quarterly Business West meeting last Friday, attended by both Swindon MPs; Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland.
Business West is a not-for-profit company with 200 staff that works with local businesses to help make the South West a decent place to live and work. They host meetings with Swindon business representatives where they receive an update from MPs as well as the council on both national and local issues.
High on the agenda was the ongoing votes in Parliament regarding the EU Withdrawal Bill, as well as issues including local healthcare and the challenges facing the high street.
As the former Chair of the All Party Retail Group in Parliament, Justin was able to update attendees on his recent meeting with the British Retail Consortium (BRC) where he discussed possible measures to safeguard the UK’s high streets from the effect of online shopping. Ultimately, the power is with the consumers but various measures were discussed including online retailers being taxed in line with high street stores.
