Justin Tomlinson MP with Nova's Olympic Ambassador and their winning torch
Justin Tomlinson MP today joined teams of budding sports stars from schools all over Swindon at the opening of the Swindon School Games.
The Games saw teams from over 60 Swindon primary, secondary and special schools gather at the link centre for a day of competitive and taster sport. Whilst the teams competed in sports like swimming, athletics and tennis, the day also gave everyone the opportunity to try out new sports.
The Swindon Wildcats put on ice hockey taster sessions and there was also the chance to try out wheelchair basketball, supported by local Olympic torch bearer Ben Fox, who hopes to compete in the sport at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Opening the Games, Justin Tomlinson MP said “It is fantastic to see so many enthusiastic young people here today for an exciting day of sport. This is a great opportunity and I hope you all have an amazing day.”
Over 2500 young people of all ages from all over Swindon took part in the School Games, a fantastic opportunity to celebrate sport.
Speaking at the Closing Ceremony, Justin Tomlinson MP said “It is great that so many of you have had the chance today to compete in a whole range of sports and try out something new. This has been a real feat of organisation and the fact you all enjoyed the day so much is a credit to the hard work of all the volunteers that made it happen. I hope that this will be the first of many School Games in Swindon, and that you all go away inspired to be the next Swindon Olympian in whichever sport you most enjoy.”
