Alan Duncan MP and Justin Tomlinson MP with the team from Lights for Learning
Justin Tomlinson MP today secured a visit to local charity Lights For Learning from International Development Minister, Alan Duncan MP.
The charity design, manufacture and install, low energy solar/wing powered LED lighting systems for use in schools and hospitals in some of the poorest corners of the world. The lighting systems they have already installed have made a huge difference to hundreds of lives – allowing children to support their families during the day and also get and education by night.
The Minister was visiting Nova Hreod School to see a link school project that Nova had established with a high school in Cape Town. Justin managed to secure half an hour out of the Minister’s tight schedule for him to meet Lights for Learning and to see first hand the fantastic lighting systems that they produce and the difference they are making.
The charity also work with local ex-offenders to build the lighting systems, helping to give them the experience and skills they need to re-build their lives.
Justin Tomlinson MP said ““I was delighted to meet Alan Duncan when he came to Nova Hreod to see for himself the excellent work being done by staff and pupils supporting Lights for Learning.
“It’s a fantastic local charity that makes a lasting difference in some of the poorest countries in the world. Their ingenuity in designing and producing solar-powered lighting units for schools and hospitals in developing countries is extremely impressive.
“With the present debate over aid spending, this charity is a good example of how we as a nation can contribute to help developing countries, whilst also boosting our own economy and training our workforce at home.”
