Justin Tomlinson MP today signed the Charter, organised by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Town Centres, for Town and City Centres.

The Charter states that the undersigned commit to do all that they can to support their local town and city centres.

This support can take the form of proactive engagement with local partners like retailer, market traders, BIDs, local authorities and other members of the business community.  It also includes things like promoting investment and championing the town at a national level.

Justin Tomlinson MP, signing the Charter for Swindon, said “As a former small business owner myself, I recognise the importance of engaging with the business community to help tackle the challenges faced by our town centres.  It is only by working with all parties involved that innovative ideas can be taken forward and implemented.

“Swindon Town Centre is by no means immune to the challenges that affect every High Street, but we are bucking the trend thanks to our willingness to try new ideas.  Swindon Borough Council cut parking charges to just £2 for 4 hours.  Following this we have seen a 10% increase in footfall and some cafes reported as much as a 30% in takings as dwell times increased.

“I meet frequently with Swindon’s business community and I will continue to do all I can to promote and support our Town Centre.”
