Justin Tomlinson MP surveys Network Rail plans to modernise the Great Western railway
Network Rail were today in Parliament to inform MPs about their plans to modernise and upgrade the Great Western rRailway over the next decade. As MP for North Swindon, Justin Tomlinson attended to hear about the benefits these plans will have for Swindon.
In a programme of 13 major projects, seeing an investment of £5bn, Swindon will directly benefit from five of them. The redoubling of the Swindon-Kemble line will see a more frequent and reliable service. The electrification of the London-Bristol line that passes through Swindon will deliver a faster, greener, quieter and more reliable railway for Swindon commuters.
Demand for rail services in Swindon has increased by 50% in the past 10 years. Commuters will benefit from new trains as part of the network wide Intercity Express Programme, increasing capacity and helping ease overcrowding. New signalling and communication technologies will also address delays due to signalling problems.

The improved rail link is vital in attracting new businesses and employers to Swindon who'll invest in the local economy and provide employment opportunities. Passengers will also benefit from faster journeys and increased capacity, reducing overcrowding and helping to bring down prices for hard-pressed commuters .”
