Justin Tomlinson and South Swindon MP Robert Buckland at a World
Book Day Event in Parliament
As schools and libraries across the country celebrate World Book Day, North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson today pledged his support for the annual event.
World Book Day is an annual celebration of books and reading, marked in over 100 countries around the globe and this year marks the 15th anniversary of it’s celebration in the UK. Over 14 million children across the country will receive free book tokens to exchange for specially produced books.
This year, the event has moved online, with live appearances from leading children’s authors including Jacqueline Wilson, Eoin Colfer and Julia Donaldson which schools can watch online.
The event is not simply about encouraging reading, but also about raising money for charity. Last year the event raised over £350,000 for charity and this year World Book Day hopes to raise over £500,000 for UK charities.
Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Libraries, Justin Tomlinson MP said “World Book Day is a fantastic annual event that gets children all over the country interested in reading. As Chair of the APPG for Libraries, I am pleased to see so many schools and libraries get involved, including our fantastic new Central Library in Swindon.”
