Justin Tomlinson MP with Head Simon Cowley and the four enthusiastic tour guides
Justin Tomlinson MP today visited Haydon Wick Primary School to talk to the pupils about what it is an MP does.
Justin was grilled by the eager pupils on subjects from what it is an MP does, what one thing he’d like to do for Swindon and what his favourite food is.
Justin spoke to the school assembly about the different campaigns he has been running in Parliament, asking why the pupils thought he had chosen those particular issues and whether they supported the campaigns.
Sport in schools, financial education for young people, school libraries and young entrepreneurs all received approval from the pupils, with sport winning the day as Haydon Wick Primary School’s favourite campaign.
Four enthusiastic volunteers then gave Justin a tour of the school, talking about their school values – this week: honesty – and how older students support the younger pupils with their reading.
Justin Tomlinson MP said “I was really impressed by how much the pupils knew about the work of MPs and by their enthusiasm for the campaigns I am running for young people. I relish the opportunity to visit our local schools and talk to pupils about my campaigns, seeing which they think the most important to them.
“Haydon Wick Primary School is a fantastic local school and I today got a real sense of the importance placed on values. They all asked excellent questions, pushing me on their campaign for a school safety zone and grilling me about how as a fellow local resident I want to help Swindon. I was delighted to have the chance to answer them.”
