Justin Tomlinson MP Visits Mini Plant And Test Drives Advanced Electric Car

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has test driven an advanced electric car at the town’s BMW/MINI factory, and welcomed this week’s successful field trial results on the new vehicle.

He was given a tour of the plant in Stratton and took a first-hand look at what the future holds for the production plant, which is one of Swindon’s biggest employers.

Mr Tomlinson also took the opportunity to take an all-electric MINI E for a test drive. The MINI E is an advanced electric vehicle which is being used for trials in preparation for the launch of the company’s Megacity electric car in three years time.

Mr Tomlinson said: “It’s been a fantastic chance to have a look at the MINI plant in Swindon and discuss its plans for the future. Driving the MINI E was also a great experience and underlines the serious focus BMW is giving to developing environmentally-friendly cars that are also fun to drive.”

Jason Reakes, Head of Government Affairs for BMW Group in the UK, explained: “We’re working closely with political decision-makers, energy companies, academic partners and the pioneer drivers involved in our twelve-month UK field trial to identify the challenges and opportunities associated with electric cars. The initial results are encouraging.”

Justin Tomlinson said he was looking forward to keeping in touch with the exciting developments at Swindon’s MINI plant.
