Justin Tomlinson MP with the students, testing out their survivor skills
Justin Tomlinson MP today visited PGL Liddington to meet New College students taking part in National Citizen Service.
NCS is aimed at 16 and 17 year olds and seeks to help them build their skills and give them a stake in their local community. The programme runs over 3 weeks and gives young people a wide range of experiences, building their confidence and developing vital team and personal skills. The first week is spent on outdoor activities, the second on activities like drama or music whilst learning about the local community and the third planning a community project. This project the teams then work together to deliver. Last year over 8000 young people took part in NCS and it is the Government's ambition that every 16 and 17 year old will have the opportunity to try it out.
The New College students are currently on their first week, taking part in team building activities at Liddington. Justin joined them as they were trying out their ‘survivor’ skills, building shelters in the woods with tarpaulins and anything they could scavenge.
Justin Tomlinson MP said “I am a huge supporter of NCS and the teamwork skills it promotes. I could see already that the students are really working together in their teams to build their shelters with the challenge of making them jaguar and ant proof!
“I look forward to visiting the students again next week to hear about their plans for their community projects.”
