Justin Tomlinson MP with the School Council
Justin Tomlinson MP today visited South Marston C of E Primary School to meet teachers and pupils and to hear about the school.
South Marston Primary is the second smallest school in Swindon, with only 105 pupils of which 60% are drawn from South Marston village.
Justin met with the School Council and talked to them over tea and cake about everything from standing in elections to the relationship they have built with their twin schools.
The Council members were all elected by their peers and had to give a speech without notes on why they would be a good representative, making election pledges such as always encouraging people. Justin talked to them about what it is like being elected to Parliament and the sorts of things that MPs do.
The pupils went on to discuss their relationship with students in their partner schools in Ethiopia and Montpellier. Some told Justin about their after school clubs, from swimming, running and football to computer club.
Justin then was shown around the school by Head Alison Lowe, meeting pupils, talking to staff and seeing the work that the students have done, including the fabulous things they had made as a part of their ‘George and the Dragon’ art day.
Justin Tomlinson MP said “South Marston Primary School is fantastic, it has such a close-knit community spirit to it and I think it is great that it continues to draw so many children from the village. The focus on ICT as a compliment to literacy and numeracy is important as computer literacy is vital in twenty first century society.
“It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm the children have for their after school clubs and sport. Swimming is a big focus of the school and it certainly seems to be popular. I am a big supporter of getting young people playing sport and I was very impressed by the evident passion for sport the children had. ”
