Local MP Justin Tomlinson today joined South Swindon MP Robert Buckland on a visit to St Joseph's School in Swindon.
The MPs visited to see the work that the students had been doing in support of the CAFOD Hungry for Change Campaign.
The campaign, which is being run nationally with one in ten schools taking part, aims to highlight the fact that one in eight people in the world go hungry. With food in the developed world plentiful, the campaign is seeking the solution that would see food shared so that no-one need go to bed hungry.
The students had created a large net, attaching their thoughts and prayers about world hunger on the backs of little paper fish. These fish messages will then be sent to the Prime Minister to help highlight the campaign.
Justin Tomlinson MP said "I was so impressed to see the enthusiasm that the students had for the Hungry for Change campaign and the brilliant net of fish that they had made with their messages and prayers on.
"I think their decision to be a part of a national campaign on something so fundamental as food for the world's growing population is admirable and standing up to take responsibility for trying to change things about the world in which we live is an important part of being a good citizen. I was extremely pleased to see so many students willing to make their thoughts count by writing to the Prime Minister. Swindon is certainly lucky to have so many model young citizens!
"I was also delighted to meet one of the A-level citizenship classes and talk to them about some of the political issues that they raised, from votes at 16 and multiculturalism right through to regulation of the press. They were a real credit to the school and St Joseph's students are a real credit to our Town."
