Justin Tomlinson MP today visited the UK Office of Zimmer, the global leader in the design, development, manufacture and marketing of reconstructive orthopaedic implants, based in South Marston.

One third of hip and knee replacements worldwide are carried out with Zimmer implants. In the UK, Zimmer have £60m invested in NHS and private hospitals, provide £80m of implants to British patients every year and invest £1m in education and training. The UK is second only to America in terms of published research in orthopaedics, making it an excellent place to base a large part of such a leading company. The office in Swindon handles an impressive £300 to £400 million of sales every year.

Justin Tomlinson MP met with Northern Europe VP, Anthony Massarella and his team to discuss the work of Zimmer. The meeting was an opportunity to raise the question of how providers like Zimmer can contribute to the necessary NHS cost savings and improve both efficiency and value for money. For Zimmer this has meant a focus on innovation within its products to enable less invasive surgery, reducing post-operative recovery time so patients require shorter stays in hospital. Longer lasting implants also reduce the need for secondary replacements.

Justin then went round the office, examining the products Zimmer produce before talking to the staff. Everything from marketing to customer service, from logistics to emergency support is based in Swindon, covering the UK and as far afield as South Africa.

Justin Tomlinson MP said “Zimmer is a fantastic example of the innovating and world leading businesses that are based right here in Swindon. I am very impressed by the innovation of the products that Zimmer provide to its patients. This is a lean, efficient, well run company contributing a great deal to the UK economy and leading its field in research and development. It demonstrates that Swindon is an excellent town in which to do business.”
