BMW has annouced it will build its next generation of Minis in Britain in a move that will help safeguard more than 5,000 jobs.
The German car giant, which employs 1,200 at the plant in Swindon, said it will be investing another £500m in UK car manufacturing in a move David Cameron said is a 'tremendous vote of confidence' in the workforce.
New production facilities and equipment are to be installed at the Mini pressings plant, in Bridge End Road, the assembly base, in Oxford, and its engine plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham.
Justin Tomlinson MP, "This is a significant and welcome boost to our local economy, safeguarding crucial jobs and investment. Our balance to rebalance the economy, tackle Labour's deficit to keep interest rates down and make Britain proudly open for business is helping drive down unemployment both here in Swindon and the UK."
