Justin Tomlinson MP today welcomed the news that cooking is to take its rightful place on the national curriculum.
Justin has long been part of the campaign to see cooking back in schools, giving children a practical life skill that will help keep them healthy.
The Government is currently consulting on the proposals that by the end of Primary School, children should know the basic principles of balanced eating and where food comes from. They should also know how ingredients can be combined to prepare healthy meals, be able to prepare a variety of savoury dishes and have learned basic cooking techniques.
By the time children reach the beginning of GCSEs, they should have a strong grasp of nutrition and a balanced diet and also be able to cook a wide repertoire of savoury meals and become confident in a range of cooking techniques.
Justin Tomlinson MP said "These are not fleeting skills that are memorised for an exam and then long forgotten. These are real lasting life skills that are essential for a healthy diet and that are also extremely useful when trying to feed a family on a budget. The ability to cook and make simple meals out of basic ingredients is a long lost skill and I am glad that we are looking to restore it into our education system."
