Supporting the fight against dementia at a Parliamentary event
Last week, the Alzheimer's Society Dementia Community Roadshow began a visit to the South West to reach the estimated 81,000 South West residents who live with dementia. To sufferers and their families, the Roadshow is an essential service which provides much needed information and advice about the condition.
There are an estimated 2154 people living with dementia in Swindon, of which only 44.9% have received an official diagnosis.
The vehicle, funded by Tesco, will be touring the South West until the 15 September and will be at the Swindon Tesco on Ocotal Way next week on Wednesday 5th September and Thursday 6th September between 10:00a.m and 4.00p.m.
People who are currently living with dementia, are worried about a friend or relative’s memory, or just have questions about the condition are encouraged to drop by with no appointment necessary. This is the third Dementia Community Roadshow visit to the South West. In the first and second visits we had 720 visitors and reached 3,420 people.
Justin Tomlinson MP said, "I urge fellow Swindon residents to head to Tesco next week and pick up the free information and advice on offer about dementia. It is a terrible illness that takes from people their life and independence, the earlier the condition is caught, the more that can be done, so do take advantage of the Roadshow to get valuable advice."
Debbie Donnison, Area Manager South West Alzheimer's Society, said:
"We are delighted that the Dementia Community Roadshow is back in the South West and we hope as many people as possible will take advantage of this vital free information service. The Roadshow really is pioneering as it helps us reach out to communities, tackle stigma by raising awareness of the condition and encourage people who are worried about their memory to visit their GP."
