The Government has announced plans to electrify the Great Western Main Line, from London to Cardiff, which includes Swindon. This work will take place over the next 6 years, as part of the Governments drive to deliver an improved, more sustainable train network.
This will allow:
- An increase in capacity on the line, reducing overcrowding and allow for better value tickets
- Faster train journeys, cutting the typical Swindon to London journey by 15 minutes
- Help Swindon attract further business investment, creating new job opportunities
Justin Tomlinson MP, "This is fantastic news. We have pressing for two key reasons. Firstly this is vital to attracting further investment into Swindon, helping attract new businesses and much needed employment opportunities. Secondly, for passengers this will make a huge difference as we will see faster journeys and increased capacity, reducing overcrowding and helping to bring down prices for hard-pressed commuters."
