North Swindon MP has this week been highlighting the benefits of Smart meters as they become available to people across the UK.
Smart meters are the most modern form of electricity and gas meters. They mean that for the first time, households will be able to see how much gas and electricity they are using and how much it will cost them in pounds and pence.
By 2020 all energy providers are required to deliver smart meters to every household and business at no additional charge. Giving customers precise and accurate information on their energy consumption and fuel bills, allows people to more easily compare their tariffs to other energy providers and consequently taking control over their bills. The 859 Smart meters installed by British Gas since 2013 in Swindon have worked out at an average annual saving for households of £65.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "This is a positive update for the families in Swindon, especially those with concerns over their energy bills. Energy bills are a big worry for some households and I welcome this rollout, since it will provide greater transparency for customers and help people take control of their costs.
If you have not yet been contacted by your energy provider, you can register your interest to have a smart meter fitted with them. For further information on the rollout you can visit www.smartenergyGB.org/get-yours
