North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson has welcomed the announcement that the COP26 President Rt Hon. Alok Sharma MP and the Foreign Secretary Rt Hon. Dominic Raab MP will co-host a March 31st Summit on climate change. Specifically focused on the objectives in developing countries and supporting the most vulnerable to change in the climate.
Developing countries on the UN’s Index can face multiple threats from climate change, including; rising sea levels, drought, flooding, deforestation and desertification to name a few. These effects can be compounded by substantial economic shocks in those countries and lead to water and food shortages and other humanitarian issues. The Climate and Development summit will look at ways that mitigate these impacts and offer debt relief and access to finance for developing countries.
Countries that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change will be the focus of a UK summit later this month, as part of the road to COP26 in Glasgow this year. The Climate and Development Ministerial will bring together countries and partners to focus on how we work together on these issues and prevent them from getting worse. The event, which will be hosted by the UK will be convened virtually on the 31st March. Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the UK International Champion on Adaptation and Resilience for COP26, will also attend.
North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson said:
“I am very positive about the impact COP26 will have, in resolving some of the disagreements in our approaches to tackling climate change as a global community, and welcome the proactive role played by the COP President and the Foreign Secretary for their work in this respect.”
COP26 President Designate, Alok Sharma, said:
“One of my top priorities as COP President is to champion global action for vulnerable countries on the frontline of climate change and the Climate and Development Ministerial is a key part of this approach.”
