Justin Visits Local High Rise Towers To Reassure Residents

Justin Tomlinson MP has visited high rise towers in his constituency, to reassure residents that in the wake of the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, their buildings are completely up to fire safety standards and there is no reason to worry.

Justin visited Upavon Court and Cleverton Court in Penhill along with representatives from Swindon Borough Council, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service and local Councillors. He met with residents in the towers and spoke with them about their biggest concerns and issues with living there, many of them were understandably shocked at the horrific events at Grenfell Tower.

Residents have been assured that the high rise buildings in the area are completely brick cladded and lack any combustible cladding, such as composite aluminium cladding that was seen in the tragedy at Grenfell Tower. Both blocks he visited also are protected by regularly inspected fire alarm systems and fireproof doors.

During the visit, Justin also highlighted a problem for many residents in that area of items such a bikes and prams being irresponsibly left in hallways. Representatives from the Fire Brigade assured him that in an emergency situation, keeping hallways and staircases clear is vital.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I think it was really important to come out here today to do what we can to reassure residents and discuss the most important aspects of fire safety. I watched with others in complete shock and sadness at the tragic events unfolding at Grenfell Tower and as the MP I will assure residents that although they are completely safe, every precaution that can be taken to increase safety, is being taken to keep people safe in the future.”
