Justin Tomlinson MP has welcomed the latest data released by the Office of National Statistics, which has shown another fall in both unemployment and youth unemployment in North Swindon.
The number of people out of work in the constituency fell by 61 last month (down 213 over the past twelve months) whilst youth unemployment fell by 25 (down 70 since the same date last year). Overall, unemployment in North Swindon has fallen by 34% since the General Election in 2010, whilst youth unemployment has fallen by 30%.
Nationally, unemployment fell by 167,000 in the last three months of 2013 (the largest quarterly fall in 17 years), 280,000 more people are in work and the number of people in work rose to 30.15 million - up by 1.3 million since May 2010.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "It is fantastic news that unemployment in North Swindon has fallen 34% and youth unemployment has fallen by 30% since the General Election in 2010, however we mustn't be complacent - there is still more to do. This latest welcome fall in unemployment shows that the Government's long-term economic plan is helping to deliver jobs and growth in Swindon".
Prime Minister, David Cameron MP, said: "These statistics show today that youth unemployment is coming down, long-term unemployment is coming down, the claimant count is coming down, and unemployment overall coming down—but above all, what we see today is the biggest ever quarterly increase in the number of people in work in our country. There should not be one ounce of complacency. There is still a huge amount of work to do to get Britain back to work—but there are 280,000 more people in work and that is 280,000 more people with the security of a regular pay packet coming in for themselves and their family".
