The Government has accepted the recommendation from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine. North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson has welcomed this news as a crucial step in the fight against Covid-19.
This comes after months of rigorous clinical trials to test the vaccine’s effectiveness, combined with a thorough analysis of the data. Experts at the MHRA have concluded that the vaccine has met its strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness. The Government has announced it accepts this recommendation and will be announcing its plans for the vaccine’s distribution over the coming weeks.
The Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI) is expected shortly to publish its final recommendation for priority groups to receive the vaccine, including care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and the clinically extremely vulnerable. The vaccine will be made available across the UK from next week. The NHS has decades of experience in delivering large-scale vaccination programmes and will begin putting their extensive preparations into action to provide care and support to all those eligible for vaccinations.
North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson said:
“I welcome the news that the Government fully accepts the MHRA’s recommendation for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for use in the UK. Over the coming weeks and months, this will ensure we begin to get the clinically vulnerable and most susceptible to Covid-19 properly protected and I look forward to the planned announcements outlining further details on how the vaccine will be made available.”
