Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced the creation of an Office for Veterans’ Affairs to provide lifelong support to military personnel – news which has been welcomed by North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson.
The Cabinet Office and Ministry of Defence will work together on the new unit, overseen by Minister for the Cabinet Office Oliver Dowden, and Minister for Service People and Veterans Johnny Mercer.
This marks the first time a dedicated Cabinet Office Minister will have oversight of veterans’ affairs, to ensure that the needs of veterans are at the centre of government policy.
The Office will work with departments to coordinate and drive government policy on veterans’ welfare, spanning mental and physical health, education and employment. The head of the Office for Veterans’ Affairs will report jointly to both Ministers.
Justin Tomlinson said “I am very pleased to see the Government take this step, it will ensure the whole of government pulls together to deliver the life-long support our veterans deserve.”
