North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson has welcomed the news that The Speedway Stadium application will return to planning next week – and is recommended for approval.
The recent delays were due to concerns around noise levels, and ensuring that the guidelines regarding noise disturbance are adhered to. The new report has recognised the importance of speedway to Swindon, and that an acoustic noise barrier will limit noise disturbance. In addition, because the new main stand will be built on the opposite side, construction can begin before the current stand is demolished, so in theory it can be done as soon as they are ready.
Whilst the new stadium is being developed in the location of the existing stadium, it is completely new with only the existing racing surfaces being retained in part. The Speedway and Greyhound race tracks are being shortened to improve racing and are being fitted with new lighting and a new safety fence designed to provide the ultimate media coverage and viewing experience.
The entire arena complex is surrounded by a 3.5m wooden and landscaped noise attenuation and security fence, enhancing the visual appearance of the Stadium and providing high levels of noise attenuation for the surrounding environment.
The focal point of the complex will be the new customer and racing facility. The 2 level multi-functional building will accommodate over 700 customers and provide balcony viewing over the race tracks together with a new racing kennels complex, new speedway pits and changing rooms, a youth training facility, lecture rooms, offices and a combined community/customer café and bar.
