Local MP Backs Bone Cancer Research Trust

Justin Tomlinson MP has given his support to a new campaign called ‘The Biggest Fight Against Bone Cancer’, the campaign is geared toward raising much-needed awareness and funds for bone cancer treatments.

At the reception Justin learned that every year in the UK and Ireland around 600 new cases of primary bone cancer are diagnosed and around 300 people die from these cancers. He also heard from Jamie Wood, a former bone cancer patient and amateur boxer who was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in 2010. Jamie underwent 16 courses of chemotherapy and 3 major operations as part of his treatment and is an inspirational story to sufferers of the illness. Jamie is supportive of this campaign and the importance of raising awareness of the illness.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: “I am unsettled by the fact that survival rates for bone cancer have remained unchanged for over 25 years. As the former Minister for Disabilities I know that many bone cancer patients are left with disabilities and in tremendous pain after their treatments. It was great to hear more about the Bone Cancer Research Trust and I am happy to give my support to see that their crucial work in early diagnosis and treatment options pays off.

Mat Cottle-Shaw, Head of Fundraising and Communications, said: “Primary bone cancer, which continues to be an under-profiled and under-funded disease, needs everyone to recognise the importance of this campaign and how crucial it is to primary bone cancer patients. We look forward to working with Justin in the future to help raise vital awareness of bone cancer across the country.”
