Justin Tomlinson MP has encouraged local residents to visit a new exhibition which aims to educate people from all generations about the affect the conflict had on Swindon.
The exhibition, entitled 'Swindon In The Great War – One Town's War', was launched to mark the centenary of start of the First World and will run until 31st January 2015. It has benefitted from a Heritage Lottery Grant and can be found at the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery on Bath Road, Old Town.
Researched and compiled by the history group Swindon In The Great War, the exhibition features a wide range of artefacts from the conflict including photographs, uniforms, weaponry, medals and paperwork.
Justin is hoping the exhibition will be visited by thousands of residents between now and next January and has praised the move to run workshops with schools to educate young people from across Swindon about the impact of war on the town.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: "The exhibition is an excellent idea as it not only highlights the important role Swindon played in the First World War but gives residents a hands-on idea of life in 1914. I'd encourage as many locals as possible to visit the exhibition and I am delighted that students will get to experience the exhibition as part of the forthcoming workshops".
Sophie Cummings, Curator of the Exhibition said: "I think it is an excellent exhibition and it brings to light all the different experiences that the people of Swindon encountered during the conflict. The exhibition certainly shows how the First World War changed the day-to-day lives of so many people."
