Justin Tomlinson MP has visited the showcase of the Swindon Down’s Syndrome group finishing their week long Salamander Project.
The Salamander Project is a five day long course in which the participants work with local firefighters, police officers and paramedics to develop their self-esteem, build skills and have fun. They work as a team and learn firefighting skills such as abseiling, ladder climbing, search &rescue, first aid, road traffic collision rescue skills, water rescue, and how to use real operational equipment.
On the final day, a showcase is held where the young people can demonstrate their skills in two scenarios; the first being a road collision where people are cut out of cars, and the second being a house fire where the fire must be put out & the people inside are saved. This is all performed in front of members of their family and friends, with certificates then awarded to all the participants.
This is the ninth year in which the Swindon Down’s Syndrome group has taken part in the Salamander project.
Justin Tomlinson MP said: “This is one of my favourite visits each year, it’s truly fantastic to see how much youngsters from the Swindon Down’s Syndrome group enjoy participating and transforming into members of the emergency services. A big thank you as ever to the fire service, police and ambulance services for making all of this possible.”
