North Swindon MP, Justin Tomlinson, visited St Francis Church of England Primary School to give the juniors the opportunity to pass their own Parliamentary School Bill as part of a fun assembly to explain how Parliament works.
Students chose sports provision in schools as a topic and brought forward a Parliamentary Bill based on increasing the hours spent playing sport in school.
One side of the room became the House of Commons, the other side the House of Lords. The Bill, carried by the nominated Clerk, went back and forth between the Commons and Lords, with both sides disagreeing on how much extra sport they wanted, until the 'MP's' cast their final votes. After the school bill flew to and fro between the two Houses, the Clerk took the bill to the 'Queen' who was happy to grant Royal Assent.
Justin Tomlinson MP said "It was great to be able to come to St Francis Primary School to go on a tour of the school and engage pupils in the parliamentary process. The students really enjoyed themselves and I was very impressed by their knowledge and enthusiasm, the future of democracy is in safe hands."
