Local MP and football fan Justin Tomlinson joined the Swindon Town Supporters Trust for one of their regular board meetings last week, as they discussed a variety of issues including supporter involvement in football clubs and disability access to stadiums.
Justin had spoken to Sports Minister Tracey Crouch before the meeting in order to provide an update for the trust on a variety of different issues and was able to give an update on the work that they have been doing collectively to improve disability access in football stadiums across the country.
Other issues were also on the agenda during the meeting, including the Trusts’ Red Army Fund which aims to raise money for a variety of projects including the ‘Raise the Roof’ fund to put a roof on the oft-redundant Shrivenham Road end of the County Ground, as well as the ‘Build the Bank’ project to regenerate the Stratton Bank area including the toilets, catering facilities and turnstiles. Justin was also full of praise for the work that the Trust does in the community, including current plans to create a community garden which is dedicated to the development of the shrublands behind the Stratton Bank.
Justin Tomlinson MP said, “I am full of praise for the Swindon Town Supporters Trust, they are a real asset to the club and possess a real passion for improving the club. As a set of football fans, we are lucky to have them involved in our club. Additionally, most football clubs in this country are behind when it comes to disability access to their grounds. It is my belief that football should be a game enjoyed by everyone, and someone with a disability should have as much of an opportunity to watch the game as someone without a disability. I am working closely with Tracey on this issue in my capacity as Minister for Disabled People and I am glad that the Swindon Town Supporters Trust has clear ambitions for our own club to open up disabled access.”
