Local MP Meets With StreetGames To Discuss The Power Of Sport

North Swindon MP & Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Sport, Justin Tomlinson, has met with the StreetGames charity to explore innovative & sustainable ways to use the power of sport.

The StreetGames charity was set up by half a dozen organizers of neighbourhood sports projects. In 2005 they came together to make sport more widely available for disadvantaged young people and to maximize the power of sport to change young lives and to change disadvantaged communities.

It also works with the national governing bodies of sport to help them to grow their sport amongst disadvantaged young people. This work is important because disadvantaged young people participate in sport less frequently that their more affluent peers.

StreetGames manages the network of Doorstep Sport providers. There are almost 1000 organisations in the network. They are community groups, local authorities, sports clubs and other types of organisations that are concerned with the well being of disadvantaged young people.  StreetGames does not own or control these organisations – they are independent and shaped by the needs of the young people in their own neighbourhood.

Justin has previously spoken at the charity's national conference and during the meeting he learned more about their plans to expand innovative & sustainable ways to use the power of sport.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: "It is always good to sit down with StreetGames to learn more about the innovative & sustainable ways to use the power of sport. As Chair of the APPG for Sport, I am working to ensure we have a healthy & active nation and that funds from things like the sugar tax are used to deliver this. StreetGames' network of providers, and its work with national governing bodies, put it at the forefront of delivering an active nation and I look forward to continuing to work with them."
