Local MP & Minister For Disabled People Meets Guide Dogs Charity In Parliament

North Swindon MP and Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson, has met with representatives of the charity Guide Dogs in Parliament as part of the 'Access All Areas' campaign

Guide Dogs provides independence and freedom to thousands of blind and partially sighted people across the UK through the provision of guide dogs, mobility and other rehabilitation services. It also campaigns passionately for the rights of those with visual impairments.

Since first being elected in 2010, Justin has worked to support Guide Dogs both nationally and in Swindon. As the Minister for Disabled People, Justin has worked closely with Guide Dogs and Medical Detection Dogs, as well as organisations including the RNIB, to ensure that legislation benefits people are blind or have a visual impairment.

The event in Parliament sought to highlight the issue of accessibility, particularly relating travel and the uses of taxis. Under the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal for a taxi or private hire company to refuse a booking or to make a journey on the basis that a person is accompanied by an assistance dog. This is also true for public service vehicles, including buses and trains. Additional measures relating to access to taxis for passengers who use a wheelchair will also be brought into force by the end of this year.

Justin Tomlinson MP said: "It was fantastic to meet with representatives from Guide Dogs to discuss their concerns and what more the Government can do to support people with visual impairments. I have long enjoyed a positive relationship with Guide Dogs and will continue to work closely with them to ensure we make positive changes to remove barriers".
